AUD401: Live Sound Reinforcement Course Outline

Objectives:
The student will gain an understanding and working knowledge of basic live sound applications and how it differs from the studio environment.

Admissions requirements:
Recording Arts Program Students must successfully complete: AUD101, AUD201 & AUD301

Acceptance into the Recording Arts Program is determined by the School Director and/or the Admissions Director. Week 1: A/C and Distribution Systems
Mon. 3 phase power, Delta and Wye Power
Safety, AC Distribution
Wed. Ground Loops
Using Meters, Wire Size vs. Current, 120V vs. 240V
Th. View breaker Panel in Studio, Layout Grounds of System in Studio Troubleshooting P.A.

Week 2: Speakers and Amps
Mon. Amps- Power Supplies, How amps work
Amps- Power Requirements, Amplifier Classifications
Wed. Speakers-Magnetics, Voicecoils, Spiders Basic design,
direct radiator, acoustic loading, time alignment of components.
Speakers-Raw Components and Cabinets, Vented Enclosures
Th. Hearing and basic psychoacoustics, inverse Square Law, high frequency attenuation in air, the decibel, combining multiple speakers and components, basic acoustics.
Speaker Arrays Basic horn concepts, straight exponential, multi cell, radial, Vented gap cooling

Week 3: Mics, Consoles, Effects, and Crossovers
Mon. Crossovers- Basic filter types, active and passive crossovers
Effects- Graphic equalizers, digital delay applications Macs- special live sound applications.
Wed. Consoles- Basic applications, gain control, routing, grouping, VCA’s, submasters, masters, summing amps, console
maintenance.
Th. Consoles- Learning FOH Console
Consoles- Learning the monitor console

Week 4: Real Applications Front of House / Recording Truck
Mon. Front of House (FOH) Mixer, positioning, tuning the sound system
Wed. FOH- Getting a mix
FOH- Interfacing with media and recording trucks
Th. Recording truck- Applications interfacing with the sound system Recording truck- Getting a mix

Week 5: Real Applications Stage/ Monitors/ Wireless Systems
Mon. Stage- Theatrical stages, platform stages, revolving stages,
outdoor stages.
Wed. Monitors- Monitor placement
Monitors- Getting a mix, feedback control
Wireless- packaged systems, wireless microphones,
wireless “in ear” monitors
Th. Stage Applications - Live Band

Week 6: Tech Riders, Vocabulary, Behavior, and Stagehands
Mon. Stagehands- understanding union and nonunion stagehands,
working with stagehands
Life on the Road- The do’s and dont’s,
working within company guidelines
Wed. Tech Riders- what they are, setting up for a festival
Tech Riders- entertainment management
Th. Stage Applications - Live Band

Week 7: Study of Three Basic Systems, Stadium, Arena and Shed
Mon. Understanding stadium systems, arena systems, shed systems
working with delay systems, understanding multiple systems
Wed. Understanding Theater, hotel, fairs, festivals and single speaker systems.
Th. Real world applications- Live Band

Week 8: Lighting and Video
Mon. Lighting- Understanding dimmers and their applications
Lighting- Conventional lighting equipment and techniques
Wed. Lighting- Automated lighting equipment and techniques
Lighting- Consoles
Th. Real world applications- Live Band
